We were asked to create a video featuring match on action and paying close attention to mise-en-scene. We filmed in locations around college and edited our footage using Final Cut Express. Our group enjoyed the task and felt that it helped to improve our film-making skills.

We are happy with our use of match on action shots, as they flow well and help keep continuity running through the video. We used a variety of shot types to stop the video from being dull. Long shots were used to establish location, extreme closeups used to keep the audiences attention on a certain action, and over-the-shoulder shots to show conversation. We also observed the 180 degree rule when filming our dialogue. Using this rule stopped the footage from becoming disorientating due to changing camera angles.

We encountered a problem with our video when the framing of the camera meant that a characters head was not within the frame. In order to solve this, we should have altered the height of the tripod. Some of the transitions between shots also seemed a bit too jumpy, which disturbed the overall flow of the piece. While editing, we should have altered the length of the shots in order to stop the cuts from being too short, and making the footage seem jumpy.

In conclusion, this preliminary task has helped to improve our skills in filming and further our knowledge of editing software.
